Independence “Indy” Gesselman

EMT / Paramedic

REMSA

Independence “Indy” Gesselman serves as an EMT/Paramedic with REMSA and recently responded to an extraordinarily traumatic and challenging emergency involving a severely injured stroke victim. In the midst of chaos, Indy delivered critical care and professionalism under extreme pressure. What sets her apart is not only her performance during the call, but her continued follow-up with the patient afterward; demonstrating compassion that extends well beyond the immediate emergency. Her commitment reflects both courage and humanity.

Because true service doesn’t end when the sirens stop… it continues in compassion and care.

Alex Doerr

Firefighter / Paramedic

Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District

Alex Doerr has been a steady leader during times of loss and hardship within his department, stepping up not just in emergencies but when his team needed guidance and stability the most. As both a firefighter and paramedic, he carries responsibility for lives on the worst days people experience. His leadership has helped others continue to show up when it would have been easier to break.

Because leadership in first response isn’t just about action — it’s about holding the line when others need strength.

FRF-202601-3249

Sabia Armstrong

Firefighter

Reno Fire Department

Sabia Armstrong’s impact extends beyond emergency response into mentorship, encouragement, and personal support for those around him. His nomination speaks to the influence of a firefighter who leads by example and helps others become better — on and off the job. Sabia’s service reflects the quieter side of heroism that often goes unseen.

Because strong teams are built by those who lift others up.
